Managing the Score Board 1!

The SAISA girls basketball season has started and they had their first game against a local school on the 4th of November at the OSC gym. As part of my Service and Creativity for CAS, I’ve decided to get involved by managing the score board when there is a basketball match held at our gym.

The goals I’ve set are:

  • To undertake challenges
  • To work collaboratively with other members
  • To show perseverance and commitment
  • To develop new skills
For today’s match, I was working with Jesse and Ravin in managing the score board. Jesse was in charge of the score board, Ravin was in charge of noting on the score board sheet and I was in charge of checking the number of foul troubles etc.
Although this was the first time three of us worked together, we collaborated well and everything went smoothly without facing any difficulties. Since I’d done this last year, I already have some knowledge about how to do this job, but I’d like to further take more challenges and develop skills in managing the score board. I will also show my perseverance and commitment by helping out every time there is a game, and also to show an effort and commitment to solve problems when issues are encountered.

SAISA Girls Basketball: Score Board Management!

SAISA Boys Basketball has finished its season this year and I believed that I won’t get an opportunity to manage the score board again until the next season…BUT Geckoes never sleep, now is the season for SAISA Girls Basketball! Unexpected opportunities arise!!!

On Tuesday the 18th of January, there was a basketball match between our girls basketball team and Gateway College. Once again, I had the opportunity to manage the score board for this match.

In the past, Ravin was in charge of managing the score board and I was in charge of writing down the information on the score sheet, but due to Ravin’s absence, this time I had to manage the score board. This was something I’ve never done before and was something much harder (and more pressure) than just writing down the information.

Since I didn’t know how to make a full use of the score board (such as putting the personal fouls, etc), all I did was to start/stop the clock and put the scores for both teams. Although the job didn’t seem to be hard, I was nervous throughout the game, as it was my first experience controlling the score board.

Although I made some minor mistakes, overall it was not a problem and through this new experience, I covered several criteria:

  1. Undertake new challenge
  2. Work collaboratively with others
  3. Show perseverance and commitment in the activity
  4. Develop a new skill

I’ve covered the first criterion without a doubt, it was a completely new experience and challenge for me. As for the second criterion, I’ve covered it through working collaboratively with Savinda. He was in charge of writing down the information on the score sheet and we worked together throughout the game. There were several problems which arose during the game, but we showed perseverance and commitment in trying to deal with them and solve those problems (this covered the third criterion). And the fourth criterion was also achieved; I’ve developed some skills of managing the score board. However, this is an area that still has a room for improvement. I haven’t fully understood how to put the fouls etc on the board, so I hope learn those as well in the future.

I’m certain that I’ll get another opportunity to manage the scoreboard again near future, therefore I’ll use that as an opportunity to learn more things about controlling the scoreboard.

Last week Friday, there was a basketball match between OSC and British School, and on saturday there was a basketball match between OSC and Amal International School. For both matches, I was in charge of noting down the scores with the help of Ravin. Since I’ve done this a few times already, I was a lot more confident than last time and everything worked smoothly without a problem. This was my last chance of managing the scoreboard, since the boys basketball team has left yesterday to Chennai. I’d like to reflect on some of the criteria I’ve covered from managing the scoreboard.
The criteria I’ve achieved are;

  • Undertaken new challenge
  • Increased the awareness of strengths and areas for growth
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in the activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Developed a new skill

The first criterion was definitely something which is relevant because this was my first experience managing the scoreboard. By managing the scoreboard number of times, I’ve certainly felt that this is something that I liked to do and be aware of the fact that I can improve and at the same time, enjoy more, as I get more experience. I’ve also achieved the third criterion stated above. Although I was little nervous and wasn’t really sure what to do as I was inexperienced, I showed my perseverance and commitment in trying to do this better each time. Each time, I always worked collaboratively with Ravin, who was my assistant. This was very essential because sometimes one could miss who took a shot, fouled etc and those times, we had to rely and collaborate. And lastly, I’ve definitely developed a new skill. Now that I’ve done 4 times, I’m very confident with how to manage the scoreboard and if I get a chance to do this for the SAISA girls basketball, I’ll definitely do it again!

Today there was a basketball match between OSC and another International School at OSC. Like last week, I was in charge of  noting down the scores, who scored, who fouled, etc and I was the assistant of Ravin, who managed the score board. This the second time I’ve done this job and unlike time, everything went much smooth because I knew what to do. In addition to the criteria which I’ve covered last week, I’ve covered another criterion, which is

  • Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth

I feel a lot more confident in doing this job and I hope to do it again if there’s another basketball match at OSC in the future.

Yesterday, there was a basketball match between OSC and Unique International College at OSC. I was in charge of noting down the scores, who scored, who fouled and many more. I was the assistant of Ravin, who managed the score board and worked collaboratively with him throughout the match. It was not an easy job and sometimes I was frustrated because there were lots of things to do, but I somehow managed to do this job and at the end of the day, I felt that I’ve gained a new experience.

This was the first time I’ve done this job and through this new experience, I’ve managed to cover several criteria of the CAS. They were:

  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
  • Developed new skills
