Football evaluation

Initially, the plan was to join the tournament starting at the end of September, but due to some troubles with the time matches start etc, we were unable to participate in the tournament. The football practices just ended this week.

Through nearly 2 months of football practices, I’ve managed to achieve the initial goals which I’ve set.

1. To increase my awareness of the strengths and weaknesses in football. In terms of the main strengths, they were passing, receiving the ball, precision and stamina. In terms of the main weaknesses, they were attacking, techniques and in the situation of 1 vs 1.

2. To develop skills in football. I feel that I’ve managed to really improve my skills. The strengths (which I’ve listed above) were things that developed with the practices, and that was clear to me as I realized that I was able to do more than what I initially could do. I feel that I’ve developed every skills in football from passing to shooting. Even though there are still weaknesses, they’ve also improved over the course of the practices.

3. To work collaboratively with the rest of the team members. I strongly feel that I’ve collaborated well with the members at all time. I’ve listened to the directions that Karl, Bharat and others gave, helping others with specific training like long passes and working together as a team.

4. To show perseverance and commitment in this tournament by attending each practice. I wasn’t able to attend every single practice, and I couldn’t go for 2 practices, mainly due to the stressful Extended Essay. However, I believe that despite the EE deadline and all the other assignments which came up, I consistently attended most practices, and certainly showed my perseverance and commitment (I definitely attended more practices than the majority).

5. To build friendship with new students through football. In terms of this goal, it was very successful, and through practices, I made good friends, such as Dylan, John, Abrai, etc. Making a friendship through activities is an important aspect in life, and through football, I was able to build friendship with the team members.

Apart from achieving these goals, I’ve also challenged myself by trying new things. For example, we often had a penalty shoot-out at the end of each practice, and since our goalie Savinda wasn’t present at times, I chose to be a goalie. It was definitely a challenge for me since I’m not used to being a goalie, but at the same time it was a valuable experience as to increase an awareness of the area for growth.

Overall, this nearly 2 months of football practices has been very successful and I’ve gotten many positive aspects out of  it. Although we weren’t able to take part in the tournament, I managed to develop my football skills, make new friends, challenging new things, and I’ve certainly enjoyed it while gaining new experiences.

Football Update 2

Already a month has passed since the football practice has started, and in my eyes everybody is making improvements in terms of quality of play as well as other important aspects, such as communication.

As for me, I’ve been showing perseverance and commitment by attending each session, despite the amount of workload there is in Grade 12. Participating in sports activity is a great way to have a balance in the day-to-day life. My skills in football has developed much better compared to the beginning, and I’m a lot more confident about playing football. The collaboration in sports is an important aspect, and that has also been improving, and during the games, the communications have gotten better, leading to better plays. This is a strength that is being developed as a team.

The area for growth which I can work on is the defense and the accuracy of the shots. In order to develop these skills, I hope to take risks and try to make the most out of these practices by participating in the plays as much as possible.

Football Update 1

The football practices are coming nicely and so far, I’ve been showing my perseverance and commitment by attending every practice. After a few weeks of practices, I’m now more confident about playing football, as my skills have developed and I can do things that I weren’t able to do before. And also my stamina seems to be growing, as I’m not very tired even when the practice finishes.

On the 3rd of September, we had a friendly match against CIS at OSC. It was our first match and although we weren’t able to play at our best due to the rain, we beat them by 4-1. In this match, I took the position as left mid (where I normally play) and contributed both in the offense and the defense. Towards the end, I’ve also undertaken a challenge by playing as a center back. It was the first time I played as a center back, and as I thought, I wasn’t able to do a great job. During this match, I’ve found an area for growth and I hope to develop skills as a defender too, so that I can play as a mid-fielder as well as a defender.

There is a football tournament in Sri Lanka at the end of September to the beginning of October, and I have decided to take part in this exciting tournament!

The practice started on Tuesday the 16th of August. There are three practices in a week, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

My goals in this tournament are:

  1. To increase my awareness of the strengths and weaknesses in football
  2. To develop skills in football
  3. To work collaboratively with the rest of the team members
  4. To show perseverance and commitment in this tournament by attending each practice
  5. To build friendship with new students (or students who I don’t know much about) through football

By the end of this tournament, I hope to achieve all of these goals.
