Sports Day!!!

On the 7th of September, we had a sports day. The grades were divided into 4 groups, grade 6 & 7, grade 8 & 9, grade 10 & 11 & 12 team 1, and grade 10 & 11 & 12 team 2. The four sports that we competed for were football, kickball, basketball and volleyball.

I was in team 1 of grade 10 & 11 & 12 yellow house, however, because there weren’t enough people in grade 10 & 11 & 12, team 1 and team 2 were combined (although now there were too many people in each house colour).

I took part in football, kickball and basketball and although I was very tired at the end of the day, overall it was a fantastic day!

For football and basketball, each team had 6 players, 3 boys and 3 girls, and as I’ve been playing sports with only the boys, it was a challenge for me to play with the girls as well. However, I showed commitment and I tried to work collaboratively with them all and this meant a lot of communication and understanding each other’s roles. I showed my perseverance when others weren’t collaborating, or weren’t doing much, as not everybody was familiar with these sports and it would be unethical to shout at them. In addition, as there were so many people, I deduced that it would be unethical for me to play for each game, and thus gave others a chance to participate in games.

Although yellow house came 3rd, I personally believe that the ranking didn’t matter much, as everybody seemed to have a lot of fun and enjoyment. As this was my last sports day at OSC, I hope that the memories will be with me in the future.

Sports Gala

On the 16th of September, the secondary school had a Sports Gala. This is the day where we compete against other house colors through various sports, which were Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Kickball and Swimming. Throughout this Sports Gala which ran for the whole day, there were numbers of criteria that I feel I’ve fulfilled. They were:

  • Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities

I think the first criterion was quite noticeable for me and I have increased an awareness that I have a potential to be a decent football player. This is also the area for growth, which could be improved through joining the SAISA Boys Football this year.

The second criterion was something that I had to have in order to make this day fun for everybody. For choosing the events people were going to participate in, I worked collaboratively with other people from my house color to make sure that everybody is participating in some events and make sure that they’re happy with what they were going to do. Also this criterion was fulfilled through participating in the events. Sports is something that requires collaboration with others and I think I worked well with the other people in the same house color in order to optimize our potential.

The last criterion was probably the biggest challenge for me. Since not everybody showed up on this day, for some events we were short on players and thus I participated in almost all the events. I showed a perseverance and commitment by participating in most of the events for my house color.

This was my first Action this year and I hope to keep it up throughout this year as well as next year.
