Football tournament in Sri Lanka

There is a football tournament in Sri Lanka at the end of September to the beginning of October, and I have decided to take part in this exciting tournament!

The practice started on Tuesday the 16th of August. There are three practices in a week, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

My goals in this tournament are:

  1. To increase my awareness of the strengths and weaknesses in football
  2. To develop skills in football
  3. To work collaboratively with the rest of the team members
  4. To show perseverance and commitment in this tournament by attending each practice
  5. To build friendship with new students (or students who I don’t know much about) through football

By the end of this tournament, I hope to achieve all of these goals.

Sunflower Project

The Sunflower project will be starting on the 1st of September. We are expecting about 12 children between age 8-18, who are unable to swim, to come.

The purpose of this community service project is to teach the children from the local school how to swim. This has been the convention in this project, but this year, Avin and I have decided to twist the routine and add some computer lessons into it as well.

As the project starts from 2:40 pm to 4:00 pm, the plan is to teach the children the basics of manipulating computers until 3:00 pm, then go to the swimming pool and teach them the fundamentals of swimming for 40 minutes, and the rest to play water-polo or some other activities. By adding the computer lessons, we believe that it will make this service more meaningful, and allow us to widen the opportunities to interact with them. For computer lessons, we are planning to teach them the fundamentals of typing first.

The general aims in this community service are:

  1. To teach the children the fundamental swimming skills with the assistance of Mr. Stanley
  2.  To ensure that by the end of the year, everybody is capable of helping themselves in the pool without our assistance

My goals in this community service are:

  1. To undertake the challenge of teaching non-swimmers how to swim
  2. To undertake the challenge of teaching children who are not familiar with computers
  3. To plan and initiate activities and work collaboratively with Avin (the leader), Ms. Abeyawardene and Ms. Bertus (supervisors) for each session
  4. To show perseverance and commitment in this project by attending sessions every week and ensuring that others are attending each session as well
  5. To realize the significant and the implication of the activity on the children
  6. To develop a skill to teach non-swimmers how to swim
  7. To interact with the children and get to know them well, despite the language barrier

As I’ve taken part in Sunflower project in the 1st semester of last year, I’m already familiar with the routine, and I hope that as a vice-leader, I’ll be able to initiate this project smoothly without facing big issues.

Goals for Grade 12 Semester 1

The last year of IBDP as started, and similar to last year, my committment to the CAS will always be evident throughout the IB on this blog!

In terms of the outcome of CAS, one of the main goals is to fulfill all the 8 criteria, which are:

  1. Increase awareness of the own strengths and areas for growth
  2. Undertake new challenges
  3. Plan and initiate activities
  4. Work collaboratively with others
  5. Show perseverance and commitment in the activities
  6. Engage with issues of global importance
  7. Consider the ethical implications of the actions
  8. Develop new skills

These are the most important component in CAS and I hope to address these criteria frequently as to show that my learning is something significant.

Action:

One of the main actions in this semester is to try out for the football tournament in Sri Lanka. The tournament will take place towards the end of September.

Another action is to come for the community basketball on Saturday. As this is totally optional, I may not come every week, but I hope to come as many times as I can.

If time and my schedule allows, I hope to try some sports for after school activities in the second block, which starts around in November.

Service:

The Art Project, which we’ve run last year has now come to an end, and I’ve joined Sunflower Village, as it lack the students who are involved in it. I will be the vice leader of this community service (leader: Avin) and I hope to collaborate with Avin and successfully run this service.

If there are any other activities, whether in school or outside school, where I can get involved in some service activities, I hope to do so and all of them will be reflected on this blog.

Creativity:

This section is probably the part that I lacked the most last year. Therefore I’ll make an effort in getting involved in creative activities. I may join a musical club or some other activity for the second block of after school activities, and if possible, get involved in the offstage staff member for some drama production in the school.
